A person opens your website with a goal. An AI browser does too, except it may be working from a screenshot, the page structure, an accessibility tree or a combination of these signals.
If the menu is an unlabelled symbol, the button text is vague and the form never explains whether it succeeded, the journey becomes uncertain. That uncertainty is worth fixing even if an AI agent never visits.
There is no universal “AI-browser compatible” badge that proves every agent can use your site. Different tools have different capabilities and restrictions. The useful question is narrower: can this agent complete this permitted task on this website, and where does it get stuck?
Start with something a customer actually needs to do
Choose a realistic, bounded task. For a studio website, that might be finding a relevant service, identifying a project in a similar industry and preparing an enquiry. For a software business, it could be comparing plans or locating a help article.
Define success before testing. Finding the contact page is different from submitting a form. A test should stop before sending a message, making a purchase or changing an account unless that action is specifically authorised and safely arranged.
This article describes a test protocol. It is not a report that we have tested a particular browser against your website.
Use controls that explain themselves
Google’s guidance on agent-friendly interfaces describes how agents may use visual and structural signals. Native interactive elements, meaningful labels and clear page state give them more reliable information.
A link should take the visitor somewhere. A button should perform an action. An icon-only control needs an accessible name. A form field needs a real label, not only placeholder text that disappears when typing begins.
These choices also support people using assistive technology. The W3C’s guidance on standard HTML controls explains how native elements expose names, roles and values. Accessibility is a strong foundation, but it is not a guarantee of success for every automated agent.
Make the next action specific
“Explore” can work when the surrounding context is obvious. Repeating it across twelve unrelated cards makes the destination harder to infer. “See Webflow projects” or “Compare hosting options” tells the visitor more.
Navigation should reflect the decisions people make. Work, services and information about the team have different purposes. A huge list of equally weighted links forces both people and agents to reconstruct the hierarchy.
Keep key service information in the page itself. An essential condition hidden inside an animation, image or hover-only panel is easy to miss and difficult to reference.
Show what happened
After an action, the interface should communicate the result. Did the filter update? Was the form accepted? Is a request still running? If validation failed, which field needs attention?
The W3C’s form notification guidance covers understandable error and success feedback. A brief colour change or a disappearing button is not a clear confirmation.
Be especially careful with repeatable actions. If the interface remains ambiguous, a person or agent may try again. The product should handle repeated submissions safely rather than relying on everyone guessing correctly.
Keep motion from moving the target
Animation can give a website character. It should not make the next click a moving target. Reserve space for images, avoid unexpected layout shifts and keep navigation usable while visual details load.
A decorative hill, a subtle glow or a transition can sit alongside a stable content structure. A full-screen sequence that must finish before the visitor can find a service creates a different kind of experience.
Respect reduced-motion preferences and test without assuming a large, fast desktop. The objective is not to remove personality. It is to keep personality from obstructing the task.
A small, repeatable review
- Write the task and limits. Name the starting page, expected result and actions that must not be taken.
- Record the environment. Note the browser or agent, date, viewport and whether it is signed in.
- Observe the path. Record wrong turns, ambiguous controls and unclear outcomes, not just a final pass or fail.
- Fix the interface issue. Prefer a clearer human experience over a special hidden instruction for the agent.
- Repeat the same task. Compare the outcome and check that the change still works for people.
Use test data and respect authentication, consent and bot-protection boundaries. Making a legitimate journey understandable does not mean removing safeguards or disguising automated activity.
Improve the website you already have
You do not need to rebuild a sound website around a speculative agent interface. Begin with the navigation, forms and important customer journeys that already deserve attention.
